Itinerary

Join Luca to travel the world virtually, to explore art, history, and what’s happening today.

Luca continues Art Around the World in Venice, where we explore the Masters Tintoretto and Veronese in the settings for which they were painted—churches in Venice.

Grant me paradise in this world; I'm not so sure I'll reach it in the next. — Tintoretto

In the sixteenth century, Venice was one of the largest and richest cities in Europe, due to its location on the Adriatic and critical role in the Silk Road trade route. The traditional patrons of the arts—the Church and nobles—were joined by the newly enriched merchants, who commissioned works of art as a way of showcasing the one's wealth, or ancientness of one’s lineage, or the importance of one’s office (yep, “keeping up with the Joneses”). This steady demand for paintings from both local and international clients fostered a climate of exceptional competition and innovation.

Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese together created a body of work that defined a "Venetian style" through loose technique, rich coloring, and often pastoral or sensual subject matter. These elements inspired countless later artists, as we will learn. Let’s explore!
